It was late afternoon and I was riding to Coburg along Highway 2. I had planned to stay in Coburg but I saw a sign that read, Pentecostal Camp. Great I thought. Perhaps I can spend the evening at the camp and have some fellowship as well! Since I was doing ministry surely they would put me up for the night!
I turned down the road where the camp was located. When I got there I was surprised to see that this really wasn’t a camp with tents and RV’s, but high end cottages that looked like homes. There was a huge gate that surrounded the camp. I went to the office only to find it closed at 4 pm. It was now about 7 pm. I manage to stop a jeep of young fellas who I found out later were maintenance men. I told them about my travels and about my ministry and asked if they could help me out and allow me to pitch my tent for the evening and I would be gone early in the morning. One fella called from his cell phone and asked. They said Yes for sure. Wait here and a lady will come to direct you! Great I thought!
15 minutes later a lady showed up and I thanked her for coming and helping me out! She brought me into her office and I waited for her as she spoke on the phone to someone else. She told me I needed to do some paperwork. We like to know who is in the park. Ok I said. I filled out my contact information. Then she showed me a sheet of all the rules and regulations for the park. Wow I thought, this is a big deal for me just to throw up my tent for the evening! The sheet seemed strict about what people were to do each day. But did include bible study groups and prayer daily.
Then she told me that she would have to charge me $20 for the night! “What?” I said. “Are you for real! I thought you said you were going to help me out! I’m on a ministry trip… Shame on you!” I said! I told her I would go elsewhere and surely I will find someone else who will let me stay for free in their backyard! She said just wait a minute and immediately she got on the phone again. I could hear the person on the other end say, “Well what did she think, she could stay here for free!” I thought to myself, yes I did! Then she went into the back room and there was further discussion… I was about to go. She led me to believe that was going to help me out and let me put up my tent for the night! She came back and said “We have to charge you something. This is a camp ground!” $5 dollars!” I was appalled! “No thanks!” I said. And again I said, “Shame on you!” So I left angry that they would even consider charging me… They were more interested in making money and helping out a fellow Christian…
I can understand how people want nothing to do with church and God when this type of thing happens… And can you blame them! Think of all the people who go to a church genuinely looking for help of some sort and get turned down or turned away! Sad thing is that God gets the rap and is totally misrepresented!
7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8 “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'”
2 Timothy 3
2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,
4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’
